Little space in the vegetable garden, which varieties are to preferred
Planting vegetable seeds is a solution that is becoming more and more popular in the latest years: in fact, it allows to have fresh vegetables and greens of which the cultivation techniques are shared and at the same time, making our own garden or window sill more beautiful.
This decision is greatly appreciated precisely because it is possible to put it into practice in small spaces: in fact, vegetable seeds can be grown in a pot too, they do not need much care and they often produce fast-growing cute plants. In this way, you can create a functional and beautiful small domestic vegetable garden.
It’s sufficient to purchase the seeds of the shorter strains in any garden shop or supermarket. When you plant them, you must be careful to not mix the varieties and not to insert too many seeds into the soil, otherwise the outcome will be chaotic. You can use pots or wooden boxes at the bottom of which there are holes to drain excess water. Amongst the suggested species there are tomatoes and salad: in the first case the most used variety is the cherry tomatoes. In the second case, the widespread ones are lettuce and endivia because these vegetables appear as compact rosettes that do not take much space ad do not clutter. Among the seeds for the vegetable garden, strawberries are very well liked: if you do not have much space, it is advisable to use wild strawberries. The fruits are really tasty and juicy, of an intense dark red color. Once developed, the plants are very compact and have a very high yield.
Vegetable seeds and aromatic plants
A great solution when adopting a small vegetable garden at home is to opt for the cultivation of aromatic herbs: in fact, they are beautiful to look at, of smaller dimensions, useful when cooking to flavor roasts and sauces and spread an intense and penetrating perfume in the air. In this case too, seeds for the vegetable garden must be planted in pots or wooden boxes prepared to drain excess water and on the bottom of which gravel has been spread. Therefore, the containers are filled with soil and are placed under the sun, in the shade or half in the shade depending on the plants characteristics.
For example basil sprouts between april and may and needs sun and regular and moderate watering. After two weeks a light pruning is done, cutting off the tips so that the plant is forced to “stumble”. The leaves must be preferably picked in the morning and are excellent to flavoring sauces.
parsley, sage, oregano
In between the vegetable seeds from which aromatic plants of limited height develop are parsley, oregano and sage. In the first case, it is advised to plant the seeds in two separate containers in different moments, so that we’ll have a steady harvest. For example, the first seeding start in the first days of april, the second circa 15 days later. The seeds are spread on the thing and soft soil and then covered with a layer of dirt; then, a damp towel is laid out on the pot or container and it is removed only when the plants sprout, after about 40 days.
Watering must be regular and the leaves must be picked simply by cutting off the stems, so that parsley can produce more. Oregano can also start sprouting starting from april-may.
These vegetable seeds need sun, heat and little water; and they suffer from being exposed to cold and humidity. The oregano therefore prefers warm zones and is characterised for perfumed oval leaves and pink flowers. Once it was used to create popular medicine against stomach ache, while today it is used to flavor savory caked and pizza.
Finally, sage is an aromatic herb used for infusions and condiments with purple flowers and hairy leaves. These vegetable seeds are quickly sprouting in high temperatures and sunny environment: in fact, this plant does not fear the heat and the draught.
