Main properties of Licorice

Licorice is a very interesting plant from a phytotherapeutic point of view, it contains glycyrrhizic acid, plant hormones (phytosterols), flavonoids (antioxidants), saponins and B vitamins.

Sedative and anti-inflammatory properties: these properties are attributed to glycyrrhizic acid which make it useful in case of cough and to facilitate the expectoration of phlegm favored by saponins.

Heartburn and intestinal cramps: calms and protects the gastrointestinal mucous membranes by forming a protective film. Also useful in case of aerophagia, constipation and improves the circulation of the gastric mucosa.

It stimulates the immune defense: some laboratory experiments have highlighted the antiviral action and demonstrated efficacy in the case of cold sores, genital herpes and streptococcal and candida infections. In 1950, a compound found in licorice was isolated that inhibits the excessive production of estrogen with a harmonizing function. Has an estrogenic effect.

From glycyrrhizic acid, drugs are obtained for the treatment of gastroduodenal ulcer, it is not by chance that there are ready-made herbal teas with digestive indications and against gastric hyperacidity.

Contraindications: it is therefore contraindicated in case of hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, renal failure, pregnancy and breastfeeding. In these cases, ask your doctor for advice.
